What is transitional kindergarten?
Transitional kindergarten, or TK, was first introduced in California in 2010 to make a place for 4- and 5-year-olds who are developmentally between preschool and kindergarten. In a world where standards for kindergarteners are increasingly similar to those once expected of first graders, transitional kindergarten provides a bridge to meet the social-emotional and academic needs of students whose needs will not be met by pre-K, but who are not yet ready for kindergarten.
How is transitional kindergarten different from pre-k?
Our transitional kindergarten curriculum follows our kindergarten curriculum, but is modified to be developmentally-appropriate for younger students, with a more relaxed schedule and pacing than kindergarten has. The TK students have more breaks and free play built into their day than kindergartener does, and their skills practice is differentiated for their age and developmental needs.
What are the benefits of transitional kindergarten?
Students are better-positioned for academic success moving forward as they have a more solid academic foundation
Children who have already mastered the material taught in pre-K are challenged academically while still having their developmental needs met
TK allows time and space for young learners to develop socially and emotionally while continuing to build their academic skills
