Einstein has been a key part of my family’s identity

RACHEL BLUMENFELD, Head of School of Albert Einstein Academy

Einstein has been a key part of my family’s identity for as long as I can remember - my parents were always involved, my siblings and I all attended, and now I have two daughters who attend the school. After I graduated from Einstein in 1996, I continued my education at Akiba Hebrew Academy (now J.M. Barrack), then earned my B.A. in Liberal Arts from Sarah Lawrence College. Afterward, I attended Villanova University School of Law and practiced as an attorney for several years before obtaining an MFA in Writing and Literature from Bennington College and shifting my focus to education, earning my teaching certification through the University of Delaware. I have since gained extensive experience as a teacher and educational leader and have earned a National Board of Professional Teaching Standards certification, which only 3% of teachers nationwide hold. Over the past 10 years, I have spearheaded multiple strategic plans and improvement initiatives for various schools and districts. I am honored to return to Einstein and to take on the role of Head of School, as Einstein is not just a school to me but is a foundational part of who I am and of who my daughters are growing to be.

Golda Meir’s Sentiments

“Your school constitutes an important link in the chain of Jewish education which must be expanded and strengthened for the sake of our Jewish generation.”

A Vision Realized

Fifty years ago, a group of dedicated visionaries in Delaware recognized the need and the importance of providing an education to Jewish students that integrated Judaic and general studies into an academically excellent curriculum.  These visionaries recognized that despite the hurdles they would face, it was vital to create an institution that would engage children and provide them with an outstanding education grounded in their Jewish tradition.  That school, the Albert Einstein Academy, officially opened November 11th, 1969 with just a handful of students.

In the 50 years since it began, the school has instilled in thousands of children and their families an appreciation for their Jewish identities, joy in living Jewish lives, and a commitment to the Jewish peoples’ future.  Multiple studies on the impact of a Jewish education on an individual’s decision to participate in Jewish life as they become adults, point to a substantially increased likelihood of choosing to identify Jewishly and to lead a life of Jewish ritual and practice.  This fact was not lost on the leaders of the community 50 years ago, and is not lost on the leaders of today as they plan for the future of the school.

Einstein’s Board of Trustees

The Albert Einstein Academy Board of Trustees ensures the faithful implementation of Einstein's mission, provides fiduciary oversight and support to the Head of School and staff, and sets the long-term strategic priorities and policies that guide the school's operations. The board is composed of committed volunteers from the community, typically a mix of current parents and parents of graduates.
